In the days before the great war that all but tore apart the dragon realms, among the races there were a rare few among dragonkind--those with unique abilities that separated them from the known bloodlines: shadow, storm, fire, nature, sea, light, and ice.
The most powerful of such creatures, borne of untold magic and strength, the Glass Queen, was one such creature...but no the only one. Along with the Glass Queen, there was the Sage.
Born Magnus Lumos, to a light dragon and an ice dragon, from the day he was born he showed no sign of truly belonging to either race. Rather than having access to the myriad of magics belonging to the Glass Queen, a childhood friend, Magnus found his power in a perfect understanding of magic. How it worked, how it existed, how it took shape and manifested in all its forms, a perfect understanding of all power gave him the ability to use power beyond his scope, in some cases--and in others, to manipulate it.
For many generations, he was a resource of information among the races facing issues of power that could not otherwise be solved...then the day came when kings and queens did not visit his door for aid, but two old friends desperate to prevent hurting a beloved friend because of a magic that bound them: the mating bond.
How could he deny these people he loved so dearly? How could he say no when all they wanted to do was protect the one they cared about?
Thus Magnus began his quest to learn how to sever the mating bond that bound dragons. For years, decades, he sought the answer to this problem--racing against time as the threat of war loomed, with this forbidden bond promising greater strife should the world go mad.
The solution finally came--but not in time to protect his friends, and at a terrible price.
Because he could not risk their lives, their souls, on a guess...and in his rush to help them, tested his work on the only person he could: himself.
Since those times, the Sage has become little more than a myth. Doomed to a life of eternal isolation, he has long since retreated into a hermitage among the mountains. The only visits he receives are from those he knew in the time before dragon can remember, and of course the occasional mage or young dragon seeking out the legend of the Sage, and the promise of untold power that he is rumored to provide to the worthy that find him.
